Once an industrial relic, Veerhuis has been reborn as a contemporary art space. Paebbl contributed 15 m3 of precast façade panels, bringing texture and sustainability to the renovated exterior.

"It’s a very good collaboration and hopefully, in the future, lots more."

Customer context

Byldis is a leader in the construction market, with a focus on the European high-rise segment. The company employs 400 workers and has been in business for over 50 years.

In 2020, Byldis made CSR commitments, with ambitious targets for the year 2030. It plans to minimise its ecological footprint by limiting energy consumption, reducing waste, and exploring the possibilities of replacing raw materials.

The latter is where Paebbl comes in.

The challenge

New materials behave differently. Most sustainable materials need 48-72 hours before demolding.

What is demolding? It’s the period between concrete casting and the removal of the formwork. Portland cement allows it to happen within 24 hours. The entire construction industry revolves around this standard.

Byldis is no exception. It needs to remove its panels from their molds within 1 day.

Our approach

Paebbl delivered a supplementary cementitious material that made the mix 20% lower in CO2.

But most importantly, Paebbl was also the only sustainable material that could meet Byldis’ standards and norms. Paebbl binds the carbon within a few hours, like normal cement, making it possible to remove the panels from their molds within 1 day.

For testing, Paebbl’s product team worked closely with Byldis’ concrete specialists to qualify the material. It was validated by Kiwa, the renown international Testing, Inspection, and Certification (TIC) company, using the SCS Intron test methodology. Compressive strength, curing behavior, environmental impact, all technical characteristics were approved.

Together, Byldis & Paebbl produced 12 panels, used as cladding, for the renovation of the Het Veerhuis building in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
